Overview:	Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. is a trade show and property management firm, specializing in managing buildings devoted to wholesale showrooms and commercial office space. MMPI produces more than 300 trade shows, market events and conferences each year. For 75 years, MMPI has been the leading resource in North America for designers, retailers, consumers and manufacturers who look to MMPI and its properties for all the products, services and education they need to conduct their business easily and efficiently. MMPI's corporate headquarters are located in the famous Chicago Merchandise Mart, the world's largest commercial building second only to the Pentagon. Situated on the Chicago River, The Mart encompasses 4.2 million square feet, two city blocks and 25 stories. It even has its own zip code. Built by national retailer Marshall Field Company to house a single wholesale center for the entire nation, The Mart first opened on May 5, 1930. Joseph P. Kennedy was interested in the building’s concept, and purchased The Mart in 1945 and the Kennedy family ran it for 50 years. In 1998, Vornado Realty Trust, a leading real estate Investment trust, acquired The Merchandise Mart and MMPI. Christopher Kennedy, grandson of Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy, serves as president. Today, The Mart remains the largest trade center in the world and welcomes more than three million visitors each year. Sixty percent of the building’s area is devoted to wholesale showrooms.
